Torquay Hotel: BBQ USA Pork Spare Ribs
The Torquay Hotel hit our radar many years ago. A couple of members had tried the Ribs there and it was always on the cards to go back. The memories were faint but one thing that could be remembered was it was a huge serving of ribs with a smothering of sauce.
Fast forward to 2014 and the memories had to be relived. Would the Ribs live up to the hype of many years ago? The booking was made and six members of Rib Appreciation Society ventured out for a casual meet up.
It was a Sunday night and the Torquay Hotel has a vast array of seating so a booking was probably not really required, however it is probably always a good idea to give the Chef a heads up that 6-8 people will be ordering Ribs. The décor was quite modern and there is plenty of space to move around inside the Pub. You do need a bit of space though as there is no table service so all ordering is required in one corner and all drinks ordered from the bar on the other side, no different to most other bistro style setups.
The BBQ USA Pork Spare Ribs were originally deemed to be a little on the pricey side, but the bonus was being at a Pub the drinks are a little cheaper than a restaurant. Cascade beers were mostly the order of the day and at only $6 per stubbie, it quickly won a few members over.
The BBQ USA Pork Spare Ribs all came out together and were instantly impressive in their size and presentation. The platter came with one large and one small rack, which also was covered with a large amount of crispy steak fries and quite a decent salad. All of a sudden the price seemed more than reasonable. The real kicker was the onion rings and pot of USA Bourbon BBQ sauce that accompanied the Ribs. Some of the RAS members were unable to finish all their sauce and some were craving even more.
While the Ribs were impressive in their size, a lot of the size turned out to be bone. Only thin portions of meat in between each bone left us wishing for slightly more. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as it meant you couldn’t absolutely gorge yourself to death on Ribs. The amount of meat and sides turned out to be just the correct amount for us energetic men to consume without feeling too full to skip dessert. While the quantity of meat might have been in question the quality wasn’t. It wasn’t write home to tell your Mum quality however talk was definitely kept to a minimum while everyone was devouring their Ribs.
It’s always a good thing to eat your Ribs with your hands and this is encouraged with bowls of water provided for finger dipping. The BBQ sauce on the side was a good thing as each could decide on how much saucy goodness they preferred with every mouthful. I personally would have preferred slightly more meat on my Ribs but it is definitely a fair serving.
All in all, at $33.90 I would definitely go back and order the BBQ USA Pork Spare Ribs again from the Torquay Hotel and it’s worth telling your friends about
