Ballarat Steakhouse: Beef and Pork Ribs

Ballarat Steakhouse has been on the cards for some time now but coordinating a time to get as many Rib Appreciation Society members together made things difficult. The date we finally organised was a cold Friday night. Heading to Ballarat isn’t normally high on your list when it’s cold. The sacrifices we make in the search of the best ribs.

The Ballarat Steakhouse is actually an 1870 heritage building so it definitely has some presence in the street. It is part of the Squires loft franchise so when you see the menu you will see the similarities from the other Squires loft restaurants which include Parkers Steakhouse which we have previously reviewed.

We were greeted when we entered by friendly wait staff and promptly seated. The large Squires loft wine glasses at the table gave a feel of quality but the menus had a much cheaper standard. The only important aspect to me is the quality of the food and the service. The service was very friendly however our first drink order came out wrong, which was promptly offered to be fixed. Throughout the night there was always a waitress nearby to offer to fill our drinks. The drinks were a little on the pricey side, ranging from $7 for a Carlton draught through to $9 for a stubby of Little Creatures.

There were some important choices to be made when it came to the ordering of our ribs. Pork or beef, two, three or four racks were the options. I opted for three racks of pork accompanied with fries and barbeque sauce. Others at the table had a mixture of pork and beef so we could try a bit of each.

Very quickly our meals arrived, almost too quickly. We hadn’t had much time to get a conversation going and our ribs arrived. At first glance I was almost disappointed that I didn’t go four ribs instead of three. It looked a little small on the plate however I was quickly proven wrong and three ribs was definitely the right amount to be quite full at the end. The barbeque sauce that accompanies the ribs has got to be the thickest and most flavoursome barbeque sauce that I have ever had. There were many choices of sauce to try but our whole group all chose the same as we are familiar with the sauce as it is very similar to Parkers Steakhouse in Geelong. This sauce seemed to have a tad more flavour than Parkers, as did the baste. The sauce is also a $4.75 addition to the price.

I managed to share some of my pork in an effort to try someone else’s beef. I was a little disappointed as the beef was a bit chewy and not what I was expecting. My pork was absolutely delicious and a perfect texture. Accompanied with the sauce it made me a happy man. The fries that also came with the dish unfortunately didn’t meet the same quality and were a bit of a letdown. For the price the ribs were definitely of high enough quality but for over $50 for the meal the fries need to be better. As I stated earlier, the looks of the meal were a little deceiving. While some ribs can be majority bone, these pork ribs had plenty of meat on each rack. After the meal it was an easy clean up with cleansing bowl provided.

We also ventured into the world of desserts this time. Double choc fudge cake and sticky date pudding are both on the menu for $12 each and is served with ice cream. Both were very tasty desserts and I would recommend the double choc fudge as my pick.

Overall Ballarat Steakhouse ribs are equal with the similar Parkers as the best ribs I have tried so far. I would definitely go back if looking for high quality, well cooked ribs.
