Jazz City BBQ: Beef and Pork Ribs

On a recent trip to Sydney I was fortunate enough to stay across the road from Jazz City BBQ, an American BBQ restaurant in Surrey Hills. Unfortunately I only had an opportunity to organise a take away meal but decided that while I was there, I would try as much as I could in one night.

The interior design of the restaurant is based on an urban city theme and it feels like you’re stepping into another city. Being a huge fan of American BBQ style restaurants, I was super excited to give Jazz City BBQ a go. The wait staff were all dressed up in theme and were super friendly, which made the visit a delight!

All meat is sold by weight (pricing below) and is actually cooked freshly everyday to be ready by 6pm for dinner, which for me was quite impressive, with so many restaurants pre-cooking ribs days in advance and simply reheating. I didn’t settle for one type of ribs and eagerly ordered 100 grams of Beef Ribs, Pork Ribs and Pork Rib Tips with a side of smoked Mac and Cheese, corn bread and a pork sandwich just for good measure!

  • Beef Ribs $5 Per 100 Grams
  • Pork Ribs $8 Per 100 Grams
  • Rib Tips $10 Per 100 Grams

Jazz City BBQ is run in a cafeteria style, I had to wait my turn and my order took 20 minutes, which was fine. Once my order was ready to take away, I chose my own sauces. I had a choice of Smokey BBQ, Spicy Chipotle, Espresso, Carolina and C.G.S.F.R. Firstly, don’t ask me what the C.G.S.F.R is, I didn’t and I regret not asking. I played it safe and went for Smokey BBQ and Spicy Chipotle! (If I was eating in, I would have tried them all!)

Once I got back to my apartment, I was quite impressed with my order and the tastes just blew me away! The beef ribs were smoked to perfection with beautiful smoke lines showing on the meat. The meat fell off of the bone and had such a great smoked flavour it nearly bo ught a tear to my eye. Yes, awesome ribs makes me cry… sometimes.

The Pork Ribs were great, the meat was soft, a bit chewy but so easy to eat. It too was beautifully smoked and worked so well with both sauce. The Pork Rib Tips were the real surprise, they were packed with Smokey BBQ Sauce flavour and we couldn’t get enough. These would be an awesome starter if you were ever dining in at Jazz City BBQ.

Both sauces were fantastic but the Smokey BBQ was my favourite, it had a fantastic smoked flavour and we couldn’t get enough. Whereas the Spicy Chipotle had a nice kick to it but I wasn’t a fan of the flavour.

I highly recommend Jazz City BBQ and will be heading back there next time I’m in Sydney. The ribs were epic and probably some of the best American Style BBQ ribs I have ever had and all the sides took me back to the USA for just a little while. This place is a little gem in Surrey Hills and it’s worth a visit.
