Mitre Tavern Steakhouse: Bank Place Pork Ribs

You know when you go out for a pub meal and you find an awesome steakhouse upstairs instead… No? Well then you haven’t been to the Mitre Tavern in Melbourne. Steeped in Melbourne’s history, the Tavern has been operational since the later 1800’s. If you want to know more, I recommend checking out their website… but if you like a bit of history with your ribs, then the Mitre Tavern is the place for you.

Expecting a Chicken Parma that night, I was quite excited to see the Bank Place Pork Ribs on the menu. Smokey ribs with BBQ, tomato and coriander glaze was all I had to see and after being talked down by the waiter I went for the 600g serve, instead of the King Size 800g serve!

We were on a massive table and after about an hour and quite a few appetisers, our ribs arrived, they looked pretty damn good and the garden salad and smoke truffle salted chips looked great. I couldn’t wait to dig in!

My expectations were high, specially being in a steakhouse, but unfortunately they were not met. The flavours were fantastic, not too sweet with a perfect covering of glaze across the ribs but the meat was just tough and chewy for the most part and it took some work to get the meat off the bone.

The garden salad and chips were good sides and the 600g serve was perfect with all the starters we went through on the night. If you’re only heading in for the ribs without an entree, go the King Size, trust me!

Having tried so many ribs over the years, I feel like my expectations are always too high but at $46 for the dish, I do expect more. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt because I was on a table of 24 people and I know this is a nightmare in the kitchen to balance steak and ribs at different cooking times.

I would think that on a smaller table order, these ribs would get the TLC they deserve but I honesty, based on the cost of the ribs alone, wouldn’t go back to try them again if I was in the neighbourhood. The Mitre Tavern Steakhouse Pork Ribs could be a lot better but being in Melbourne, there are much better rib options in the area to choose from.

Venue Details:

Pros:

  • The flavour of the glaze was great!
  • I’d go back for those chips 🙂

Cons:

  • The meat was a bit too chewy and took some work to get off the bone.
  • The ribs just cost too much for the serving size.
