Smokey Joe’s Rubs

We finally got our hands on some of Smokey Joe’s Rubs today and we couldn’t wait to test them out! We always like to test our rubs before a major Low N Slow cook-ups to check out the flavours and aromas it adds to meat and to work out what sauces would work best work with them.

Today we tried Joe’s Honey Hog, Firecracker, and Rooster Rub, we tested them on skin-free chicken thighs to keep it simple with a touch of olive oil. The thighs were rubbed and coated on all sides and cooked in the oven individually till they hit just over 75C/165F.

Honey Hog

This is such a well-balanced rub, with all the ingredients identifiable on the palate, it worked perfectly with the chicken. You can feel and taste the pepper and cayenne pepper come through but neither is overpowering which allows you to enjoy the rest of the flavours.

The honey rounded things up perfectly without being too sweet, with that hint of paprika to give it a bit of depth. The sweetness was one of the concerns when ordering the Honey Hog rub, I am not a fan of overly sweet rubs, which take a lot of effort to balance with a sauce or can very quickly become too sweet but this was not the case with the Honey Hog

Honey Hog was perfectly salted, like all of Joe’s rubs and it did exactly what a good rub is meant to, make you want to go back for more! This rub worked perfectly on chicken and I can’t wait to try these on some pork ribs this weekend!

Rooster Rub

This rub is the quintessential chicken rub, it has all the flavours you need for your baked or smoked chickens at home. Balance of flavours to keep the whole family happy and worked sensationally on the chicken thighs.

Another one of Joe’s well balanced rubs, the smoked paprika and mustard bounce along your palate with a subtle heat from pepper and cayenne pepper but without too much heat so the kids shouldn’t complain, I say shouldn’t only because my 5 year old thinks that salt is too spicy.

I will continue to test out the Rooster Rub in different cook ups, I am not certain it would work on ribs the way I cook them up but this would be magic on all poultry.

Firecracker

OMG! This rub was the stand out of the three for me, Joe has spiced this up perfectly with chilli for that gives you that in-your-face heat and with black and cayenne pepper to really give you the longer mouth burn that you can only get with pepper. The smoked paprika seems to linger through your mouth and leaves your palate bursting with flavours with the help of the mustard powder. Amazing!

I will be ordering more Firecracker Rub for sure, I can see this rub working well with a sweet BBQ sauce and/or glaze. It will give pork ribs that amazing balance between the heat of the rub and the sweetness of a sauce that I am looking for in my cook-ups.

This rub will be perfect on chicken or pork every day of the week and I will definitely be making this a part of my Low N Slow arsenal from today!

First impressions of Smokey Joe’s rubs is that they are all well balanced, perfectly salted and jam packed full of flavour. Not to mention that he uses all natural ingredients, contain no MSG, is Gluten Free with no additives or preservatives, you are winning! Best of all, it’s made right here in Australia.
